Stop humming lines
My lazy bag hoist lines were always humming in the wind. The sound carries through the whole boat. I tried all the quick and easy solutions to stop this: reduce tension, increase tension, tie off on spreaders, nothing helped.
The technical problem is that there is a laminar flow around those lines which create a vibration because laminar flow is unstable. The solution is to make the flow turbulent to reduce the friction and get rid of the unstable flow. It is the same reason why golf balls have dimples and birds have feathers. The practical solution for a humming line is to wrap a 1.5mm line around the humming line. A bosun’s chair, some self vulcanising tape to fix the end and no fear of heights is all you need.
